Last week, a meeting of the Technical Commission of the Society of Mountain Guides and Leaders took place in the Brașov area.
The main objective of the meeting was to improve the quality of the training course for the profession of mountain leader, which SGLM has been organizing since 2017. In this regard, the focus was on the standardization of teaching practices for security in rocky terrain and mountain navigation—essential summer competencies that every mountain leader (and others!) must possess.
We would like to point out that, although the prerogatives of a mountain leader regarding rope work are limited—its use being strictly for exceptional cases—the leader is trained to use it to ensure the safety of the tourists they accompany during short rocky passages, in difficult conditions, and using minimal equipment.
In addition to organizing professional training courses, the Technical Commission's duties include organizing continuous professional development (CPD) modules (mandatory within SGLM) and evaluating guides who wish to join the association's active members as aspirants.
A similar meeting for SGLM instructors is scheduled for the first part of next year, which will cover winter-specific topics.
